The first architectural images of the new National Star Observatory of Cyprus, also known as the Troodos Observatory, have been unveiled by Kyriakos Tsolakis Architects.

Located in Agridia, Pitsilia, this landmark structure houses two advanced telescopes: a night star gazing telescope, the Planewave CDK20 on the Paramount ME II, and a Hydrogen-α solar telescope by Lunt Solar Systems U.S.A. The observatory also features a large astromarina for star enthusiasts to use movable telescopes. It is equipped with a 5.6-meter wide dome and a 4x4 meter roll-off hydraulic roof, both crafted in Italy.

Designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings, the observatory’s exterior emphasizes its purpose of stargazing, blending almost seamlessly with the sky. Internally, the architects opted for earthy materials such as timber, stone, and granite.

Funded by Cypriot public and European sources, the project aims to create a positive impact on the local area. The architects intended for the observatory to be a memorable landmark that attracts visitors and stimulates the local economy. Additionally, the observatory aspires to inspire future generations to pursue careers in fields critical to our planet’s future.

Public buildings often reflect the values of the societies that construct them. With this philosophy, the architects designed a low-maintenance, durable structure that they hope will endure, symbolizing humanity’s spirit of exploration and our quest to understand our place in the universe.
