The reconstruction of the GSP Stadium in Nicosia is nearing completion, with the project now 90% finished. The contractor announced that the major facility will be inaugurated this autumn, with the work set to wrap up on Wednesday, May 8th.
Construction began in November 2021 but faced multiple delays, first due to the coronavirus pandemic and then because of supply chain disruptions. Initially, the project was slated to be completed within 24 months, but the timeline has been extended by nearly a year.
The GSP Stadium is situated between Grigori Afxentiou, Evagorou, and Vasileos Pavlou streets, east of the Ministry of Finance building in Nicosia.
Post-modernization, the stadium will offer new amenities including restaurants, cafes, a children’s playground, and shops, creating a vibrant space for visitors to dine, relax, and shop. At the heart of the stadium will be a town square featuring an open-air amphitheatre for film screenings. Additionally, two underground car parks will provide 554 parking spaces, including 33 for disabled individuals, 28 for those with reduced mobility, and 12 for electric cars.
The project budget exceeds 20 million euros and covers not only the reconstruction but also the maintenance of the stadium by the development company for the next decade.
Funding for the project comes from the EU Cohesion Fund, the state budget, and the Nicosia municipality as part of the 2021-2027 Regional Development Programme.
