The Cyprus Environment Ministry has received an application to build a 147-meter-high Ferris wheel in Limassol’s old port, named the Hyperion project, designed by PPA Architects.
An environmental impact study has been conducted, and the project is now open for public discussion until December 7, 2024. Citizens are encouraged to share their views on this significant development.
The Hyperion Ferris wheel will feature a three-level base connected by a spiral ramp. The ground floor will house commercial areas and a large digital aquarium spanning 835 square meters. The first floor will include a children’s area, sanitary facilities, exhibition spaces, and offices. The third floor will accommodate food vendors, control areas, the entrance to the ride, and event spaces. The wheel itself will have 36 cabins, each with a capacity of 6 to 12 people.
Designed to be six times lighter and four times stronger than the London Eye, Hyperion will adhere to global safety standards, making it a formidable competitor in its category.
According to the developers, Hyperion will bring economic, cultural, and social benefits to Limassol, marking a new chapter in the city’s cultural and technological advancement. This Ferris wheel aims to become a new symbol and landmark for Limassol, attracting tourists from around the globe.
The project’s environmental footprint is expected to be minimal, given the fully developed infrastructure in the area. The land for the Ferris wheel will be leased from the Cyprus Ports Authority, with the complex to be built on newly created land through embankment. The project, estimated to cost €50 million, is anticipated to create new jobs and enhance the region’s socio-economic profile.
