The future of the former state fair grounds in Nicosia has been settled: the site will become the Metropolitan Park of Western Nicosia, while the Sopaz area will host an innovation zone. On 18 June 2026 Nicosia mayor Charalambos Prountzos said a common understanding had been formed between the municipality, the government and the other bodies involved on the direction of the project.
A year earlier the municipality dropped plans for a tech park and commercial development at the site (more here).
What the study found
On 12 February 2026 Prountzos told the House interior committee that a combined study for both sites had been completed, Cyprus Mail reports. The preference is for a metropolitan park at the state fair and an innovation zone in Sopaz.
According to Cyprus Inform, buildings will take up less than 10% of the roughly 240,000 m² site.
Sopaz: an innovation zone
For Sopaz, the study foresees an innovation zone supported by conference and exhibition facilities, with incentives for investors. According to the mayor, it is the largest development project in the city and possibly in Cyprus.
Next steps
Decisions are to be taken by a tripartite committee involving the government and the municipality; in February a Council of Ministers decision was also pending. The municipality opposes the proposed connection of Iroon Avenue in Engomi with Makariou Avenue.
