Old Nicosia state fair grounds to become a nature park
Nicosia municipality has dropped plans for a tech park and commercial development at the old state fair grounds; the 250,000 m² site will instead become a nature park.

The old state fair grounds in Nicosia will be turned into a nature park, Nicosia mayor Charalambos Prountzos told MPs on 5 June 2025, Cyprus Mail reports. The park will cover about 250,000 m², and the relevant studies should be ready within two to three months.
What changes
The decision reverses a cabinet decision of September 2022, which had planned a research and tech zone at the site, together with offices, a hotel and a conference centre. The municipality is considering building the technology park elsewhere, in the Sopaz area of Nicosia. A planned park-and-ride station near the site has also been dropped after objections from Engomi residents.
Support and next steps
The mayor cited a survey in which 90% of local residents said they preferred a nature park. According to him, the interior, transport and finance ministries appear to support the plan. MPs will return to the issue in October. Greens MP Stavros Papadouris said the aim is a "national urban park".
Some technical issues remain, such as access to water. The state fair has been at its current site in Makedonitissa since the early 1970s.
